The First Christmas Gift

One of the best things about giving is the story that comes with the gift.

I am sure you know the kind I am talking about. “I got you this because…” “That’s not all, look at what else it can do!” “I can’t wait to tell you how long it took me to find this.”

A few years ago my sister picked my name for the family ‘Secret Santa’ fun. She was at the mall picking up the latest season of ‘24’ when a man ran by and grabbed the shopping bags that she was carrying. Little did he know, she had no intention of giving up her latest purchases, these of course were Christmas gifts! She held on tight and yanked the bags back out of the Grinch’s hands, he fell to the ground and then scurried away. The employees and manager of the store ran over to see if she was ok (which she was, what a champion!). The manager felt so bad that he gave her a discount on her purchase… ‘24’…for me! The worst part was that she couldn’t tell me that amazing story until I opened the gift on Christmas and the story was definitely the best part. She was Jack Bauer, while buying…Jack Bauer!

One of the best things about giving is the story that comes with the gift.

This season is really all about giving, because it is centered on an incredible gift from Heaven.

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 2:8-14

The Saviour has been born TO YOU! The most amazing gift ever, the first ever Christmas gift, could not be purchased, made, or even dreamed of. God did not give us a product or a religious system, He gave us Himself, Immanuel “God with us!”

Not only was this an incredible gift, there was a story to it. Maybe you have wondered why Jesus was born is such humble circumstances. He only had his parents and some animals around. He was born in a no-name town with the only fanfare being an announcement to some lowly shepherds. This is the story that came along with the gift. All of the extra ‘stuff’ that could’ve been there would have just taken away from the actual gift: Jesus himself.  The gift didn’t need to be dressed up because it was everything we could ever need. That little child, wrapped in cloths, lying in a feeding trough is more than enough for all creation. The amazing story behind the gift is that Jesus is the Good News. The child in the manger would grow to become a man. Perfect, sinless. The story is that He is the Way the Truth and the Life. He is the Good Shepherd who came to seek and to save the lost, laying down His life for us.

I love how Christmas is a chance for us to celebrate God’s gift to us and to pass that joy along to others.  As a form of worship and thanksgiving, we share with each other, we give gifts as a symbol of what God did for us.  Really, Christmas is an opportunity for us to model God’s love. In light of that, here’s my challenge for you this Christmas:

The greatest gift that you can give this Christmas is: yourself

Now if you’re thinking “a little late to be telling us this!  This would’ve been good about 3 weeks ago” don’t worry.  Gifts are awesome.  I love them.  They are a fun way to focus on another person and bring them a little bit of joy, surprise them, show them that you care.  So don’t return them all, gifts are not bad. The GREATEST gift you can give though, is to model what God gave us the first Christmas, and to give yourself.

  • Take a few extra minutes to listen about the strange gift that your husband got but is absolutely in love with because he’s kind of a nerd
  • Put on the kid’s new movie and cuddle up on the couch to watch it with them on Boxing Day
  • Spend more time at the dinner table and just hang out with your parents and grandparents before turning on the new iPad
  • Let go of the strive for perfection and let the kids help you make Christmas dinner

Let’s enjoy giving the presents but also think about being present. That is the greatest gift we can give. It’s the greatest give we have ever received, Immanuel “God with us.”

Our prayer is that this Christmas you would know that God’s incredible love is for you! May you know the beauty of His love that He showed in giving us His Son. We hope that this season will be a wonderful time of celebrating with family and friends, and reflecting on the many blessings we have been given.

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas!
