Fruits of the Spirit Special – Patience

READ: Lamentations 3

Verse: “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

As a kid, long road trips were the worst. You’re packed into a stuffy car with your siblings and stuck there for hours with little to do. Patience is something that is often lacking during those road trips – both for the children and the parents.

Patience is a virtue – that’s how the famous saying goes. Patience is something that you grow in as you mature and that can be hard to really take on in all areas of your life. This is because patience inherently involves humility. It involves putting others ahead of you and taking time to stop and listen.

When it comes to sports training, patience is absolutely necessary. I often think back to the Karate Kid scene where Daniel is frustrated with Mr. Miyagi’s seemingly useless training. Instead of learning specific karate moves, the instructor has Daniel doing basic household chores and moves. It isn’t until later that Daniel realizes that all of that training paid off and helped him become a better competitor.

Sometimes we can feel frustrated with training. We want to see immediate results and show off to our friends. We don’t want to be stuck doing “useless” chores that will take time. But, patience is necessary for reward. If we don’t focus on the little things, we won’t be the best we can be.

In the case of soccer, if we don’t focus on dribbling, on kicking with the inside of our foot, or controlling the ball, we aren’t going to succeed. In baseball, if we don’t have a good swing or can’t catch the ball, we won’t be able to hit that winning home run or make the show stopping catch.

In the same way that we are patient here on Earth, God is patient with us. He sees us getting frustrated or disappointed and knows that our hard work will pay off. It will take time. He knows that we want Him to come again so that we can have fellowship with Him. But His work on earth is not done yet. And we have to be patient for his coming as the reward will be worth the wait!
